Craving your favorite takeout but want something fresher and more satisfying? This Homestyle General Tso’s Chicken delivers everything you love—crispy chicken, a bold sticky-sweet sauce, and just the right kick of heat. The best part? You can make it all in your own kitchen in under 40 minutes.

Ingredients:

For the Chicken:

  • 1 lb boneless, skinless chicken thighs or breasts, cut into bite-sized chunks
  • ½ cup cornstarch
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • Salt & pepper, to taste
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

For the Sauce:

  • ¼ cup soy sauce
  • 3 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 3 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 3 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch mixed with 2 tbsp water (slurry)
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tsp grated ginger
  • 1 tsp chili flakes (adjust to taste)

Instructions:

  1. Prep the chicken: Season the chicken with salt and pepper. Dip each piece into beaten egg, then coat with cornstarch.
  2. Fry: Heat oil in a pan over medium-high heat. Fry chicken until golden and crispy. Drain on paper towels.
  3. Make the sauce: In a saucepan, combine soy sauce, vinegar, hoisin, sugar, sesame oil, garlic, ginger, and chili flakes. Bring to a simmer.
  4. Thicken: Stir in the cornstarch slurry and cook until the sauce thickens and becomes glossy.
  5. Combine: Toss the fried chicken in the sauce until well coated.
  6. Serve: Enjoy hot over steamed rice and garnish with green onions or sesame seeds.

Tips:

  • For extra crispiness, double-fry the chicken.
  • Add steamed broccoli or snap peas for a complete meal.
  • Make it vegetarian by using crispy tofu instead of chicken.

This General Tso’s Chicken is crispy, flavorful, and so satisfying—you’ll never miss the takeout version again.
